3 Internships with The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Central Oklahoma Chapter

About JDRF
Driven by the needs of people living with diabetes, the mission of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. We work to accomplish this by finding and funding the best and most relevant research. JDRF also partners with other organizations and health care providers to help families living with diabetes while researchers are progressing towards a cure.

Description
The Central Oklahoma Chapter of JDRF encompasses the larger portion of our state including all of central and western Oklahoma. JDRF hosts signature events each year. In addition, JDRF works with other companies and organizations on “Third Party Events” and networking/outreach programs. Our events include:

  • Walk to Cure Diabetes (spring)
  • Black and White Ball (late November)
  • Golf Tournament (Early September)

JDRF is looking to increase our press coverage in all mediums throughout our entire chapter area. We will provide you with numerous opportunities to create pieces for your career portfolio and provide you with invaluable opportunities to pitch stories to media contacts.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Write and edit press releases. Customize press releases for communities throughout Oklahoma.
  • Develop, assemble and distribute media kits.
  • Contact the media regarding story opportunities.
  • Write and edit copy for print and radio ads and additional promotional pieces.
  • Assist with website updates including calendar of events.
  • Assist with basic graphic design of event flyers, programs, ads, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Junior or senior college student in PR, marketing, communications or other applicable major.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Outgoing personality who is willing to network and wants opportunities to build career portfolio.

This is an unpaid internship but may be used for college credit. Intern must work at least 10 hours per week. Hours are flexible and may include evenings or weekends.

Deadline: Varies for Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer internship.

Special Event Planning Internship - posted 02/03/2009

Description
The Central Oklahoma Chapter of JDRF encompasses the larger portion of our state including all of central and western Oklahoma. JDRF hosts signature events ranging from mass market events to exclusive evenings. In addition, JDRF works with other companies and organizations on “Third Party Events.” Our events include:

  • Walk to Cure Diabetes (spring)
  • Black and White Ball (late November)
  • Golf Tournament

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with JDRF staff and event planning committee, assist in the planning and execution of special events including:
    • Venue, menu and entertainment selection (depending on event)
    • Determine timing and activities (e.g. speakers, script, etc.)
    • Develop and integrate event theme (based on target audience)
    • Design invitations, centerpieces, thank yous
    • Work with an event planning committee
  • Assist in development of planning timeline and ensure follow-through on key areas.
  • Contact vendors to check availability and negotiate in-kind services.
  • Help secure, train and supervise event day volunteers.

Qualifications:

  • Junior or senior college student considering a career in event planning or non-profit management.
  • Excellent organizational skills and able to multi-task.
  • Must be willing to negotiate for in-kind services and discounts on events.
  • Outgoing personality who is able to “stay cool under pressure” (as event days can be hectic)

This is an unpaid internship but may be used for college credit. Intern must work at least 10 hours per week. Hours are flexible and may include evenings or weekends.

JDRF Ride Team: Fundraising/Communications Internship - posted 02/03/2009

Description

  • The Central Oklahoma Chapter of JDRF encompasses the larger portion of our state including all of central and western Oklahoma. We are seeking an intern to assist the Central Oklahoma Chapter of JDRF Ride Team for media coverage, fundraising assistance, and communications as the team members recruit others for the ride, fundraise, and train for the Ride to Cure Diabetes.
  • The JDRF Ride Team will be traveling to Killington, Vermont, in August 2009, to ride 100 miles (in one day!) as a demonstration of their commitment to find a cure for diabetes. Each rider is responsible to meet a specific fundraising goal.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Write and edit press releases about the Ride Team and the Ride to Cure Diabetes. Customize press releases for communities throughout Oklahoma.
  • Assist the Ride Team Chair with
    • Promoting fundraising events, including basic graphic design of event flyers, programs, adds; coordinating information mailings/emails;
    • Promoting team recruitment events
    • website updates
    • communicating with community partners (local bike shops, donors)
    • creating a “Youth Ambassador” program
    • searching for “tools” for fundraising (fundraising ideas, bicycle-related sale items, venues for fundraisers- such as a booksale)
    • Assist Ride Team members with letter-writing, factual information about JDRF and diabetes (available on the JDRF website.)
