The OKC Downtown College is a consortium of five colleges and universities offering credit classes, professional development classes and personal enrichment classes in downtown Oklahoma City. The OKC Downtown College’s marketing and communications efforts reach into all aspects of the downtown OKC business interests. Qualified candidates will be challenged to write frequent press releases about the Downtown College and related activities, create and maintain Facebook and Twitter sites for the Downtown College, and develop relationships with media professionals, agencies and industry leaders. This position assists with implementing the Downtown College’s various promotions, advertising and marketing programs. By the end of a typical three to four-month internship, interns in this area can take a marketing project from concept to implementation. Interns are encouraged to maintain a portfolio of their creative work.



We will accommodate the educational goals and requirements of the college’s internship program. We will do everything possible to accommodate specific needs in scheduling and type of assignments. The marketing intern will have the opportunity to meet with the Downtown College’s Marketing Committee which is made up of marketing representatives of the five institutional members of the consortium. The intern will have the option of participating in networking opportunities by accompanying the Director of OKC Downtown College at business related events in and around downtown Oklahoma City.

The OKC Downtown College will have three marketing internships throughout the year; one each in Fall, Spring, Summer. The intern’s work schedule will fit within a 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM window. Please specify which internship (Fall, Spring, Summer) you desire and any specific scheduling needs. Internship primarily responsible for assisting Executive Director and Director of Special Events & Marketing with on-going public relations duties as well as preparation for the Harn Homestead’s special events including the “Hootenanny at the Harn” red dirt music event in September; the “Haunt the Harn” trick-or-treating event in October; and the “Territorial Christmas Celebration” holiday open house event in December. Duties may include running errands, assisting with event planning, securing and scheduling volunteers, data entry, phone calling, bulk mailing, fundraising, event set-up and decorating, as well as assisting Education Director with teaching elementary students, giving guided tours, and gift shop sales.

Qualifications:

Internship Announcement: Senate Communications Division
(Unpaid position/For college credit only.)

Spring Semester – 2011 (Limited number of positions available.)

Preference: Juniors, Seniors, Graduate Students with a GPA of 3.0 or better

Preference: A major or minor emphasis in journalism, public relations, political science or government

Preference: Students who commit to intern February through the month of May.

Application Deadline: December 15, 2010, (or until the positions have been filled).

Internship Description:
Interns for the Senate Communications Division are responsible for assisting staff with day to day responsibilities, including distribution of news clippings internally, as well as filing and faxing press releases. Interns may also be required to write "form" press releases which require specific information to be entered into a standard template. Interns may also be asked to assist the communications staff during press conferences and other media events. Work hours will be arranged to fit the student’s schedule. Morning work hours are preferred.

Criteria for intern applicants with the Senate Communications Division:

* Applicants should be able to touch-type, with a net speed of approximately 45 wpm.
* Applicants must have good internet skills and be adept at using the internet for research, writing, and emailing press releases.
* Applicants will interview for the intern position.

A $100 transportation stipend is provided at the successful completion of the internship.

An internship with the Senate Communications Division will provide students insight as to the relationship between elected officials and the media as well as a first hand look at representative democracy in action. Interested students should have a high interest in government and communications, be responsible and accountable for their work, and behave in a mature and professional manner in the office setting.
